Professional Development on Universal Design for Learning

Mark your calendar for Friday, August 9, 9-11:30 am, for a morning of learning about the principals of universal design for learning (UDL). The FIRE Foundation and St. Patrick School are teaming up to offer this PD opportunity presented by Doreen Engel, adjunct faculty member of the Andrew M. Greeley Center at the University of Loyola Chicago. Doreen is the author of Be Open! A Guide to Prayerful Reflection on Inclusion in Catholic Schools, published by NCEA.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a way of thinking about teaching and learning that gives all students equal opportunity to learn. At its core, UDL means that a teacher designs learning experiences in flexible ways to meet the needs of individual learners. When taking a UDL approach, teachers prepare the learning environment with flexible means, methods, and materials that will allow them to better meet the needs of every student. UDL is a helpful strategy for creating more inclusive learning environments that support the needs of students with a range of abilities.

“As a former Principal and Assistant Superintendent, I understand the administrative issues involved in teaching children with disabilities. As the Director for Special Education for the Archdiocese of Washington, I enabled many schools to begin, expand, and enhance their ability to include children with all types of disabilities,” says Doreen.

This PD is offered at no charge to Diocesan educators and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited. If you are interested in attending and/or bringing members of your staff, please email fire@diocesekcsj.org or hire@diocesekcsj.org.

Change of Date for Priesthood Sunday

I was asked by a representative of the Serra Club to share the following change of Priesthood Sunday. Please share as you see fit.

Since 2001 Priesthood Sunday has been celebrated on the last Sunday of October as a special day set aside to honor priesthood in the United States. It is an opportunity to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one. It also provided an occasion to offer support and encouragement to our priests.
In recent years, the date for celebrating National Vocation Awareness Week was moved from January to the first full week of November by the United States Council of Catholic Bishops. Both that event and Priesthood Sunday deserve to be celebrated in parishes. It came to the attention of the USA Council of Serra that some parishes are not able to celebrate both events so close together.

To avoid conflict, the USA Council of Serra has approved moving the date for Priesthood Sunday to the last Sunday of September, this year on September 29th. The change of date will be circulated all bishops in the USA by the Episcopal Advisor of the USA Council of SI, and to Catholic organizations that have promoted the celebration. These and other Catholic media will receive a press release in June, along with updated promotion materials.

The Serra Clubs will be providing additional ways to celebrate this annual appreciation and awareness program for priesthood, your diocesan priests and your bishop. Thank you for promoting this celebration through parish schools, Religious Education Programs and in parish communities. Please Forward this information to parish staff, school administration and Director Religious Education. This will give them an opportunity to put into their planning calendar for the 2019-2020 School year.

October 11 PD Day Training Expenses ~ Update

The following UPDATED chart is intended to represent how much each school will pay for the October 11, 2019 PD day. I added another presenter (Christina Robson) and another school (Holy Cross) paying for the October 11. 2019. The bolded schools will help pay for the presenters. If all the presenters agree, the bolded schools will be sent invoices from the presenter for the total amount (Training + Lunch) so they school can submit that invoice to their school district for Title 2 reimbursement or pay it directly themselves if Title funds are unavailable. The unbolded schools will only have to pay their schools’ lunch amount in the ‘R’ column. Later in the school year, the unbolded schools will help pay for the February 14, 2020 PD day in much the same way the bolded schools are doing for the October 11, 2019 PD day. I will send a similar spreadsheet in the fall reflecting this concept. As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.

WEEKLY PRAYER INTENTIONS

* God of Wisdom, we thank you for all the gifts you have given us throughout this school year.  We praise you for giving us life, for saving us in Christ, and for choosing us to be your people.  As we come to the end of this school year, we voice our gratitude for the good things you have done in us, and we praise you for all who have shared in the work of this school.  We ask you to bless them in your love and give them refreshment and peace.  We praise you, God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.
